Will Rogers World Airport, commonly called Will Rogers Airport or just Will Rogers, is a passenger airport in the United States approximately 6 miles southwest of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. Situated on 8,081 acres, the airport is both military and public. It is customary to refer to Will Rogers World Airport as "WRWA" or "Will Rogers" even though its actual IATA and ICAO airport codes are OKC and KOKC. The airport bears the name of Will Rogers, the famous cowboy and comedian born in Oklahoma and passed away in 1935 in an aircraft disaster in Utqiagvik, Alaska. Wiley Post was also killed in the same crash and is honored by the names of Wiley Post Airport, the city's other main airport, and the Wiley Post–Will Rogers Memorial Airport in Utqiagvik. The only airport named Will Rogers World that has the word "World" in its name is that one. There are no planned foreign flights at this time, even though Will Rogers provides immigration and customs services through U.S. Customs & Border Protection (CBP).
The busiest commercial airport in the state of Oklahoma is Will Rogers World Airport. The airport had about 4.42 million passengers in 2019, making it the biggest year ever for three consecutive years. As of April 2022, Southwest Airlines has a market share of around 48%, carrying the majority of passengers at Will Rogers World Airport. Originally known as Oklahoma City Municipal Airfield, the airport opened in 1911. In 1941, it was renamed in Rogers' honor. The Oklahoma City Airport Trust declared the 1967 terminal building to be inappropriate in the late 1990s. The three-phase master plan was adopted, and in 2001 work on rebuilding the airport began. The 1995 photo shows the original twin concourses, which were removed to provide room for a new terminal featuring interconnected concourses, high ceilings, and contemporary amenities.
There are seventeen departure gates spread over the West Concourse (Gates 1–12) and Central Concourse (Gates 14–24) at Will Rogers World Airport's single, three-level terminal. The present terminal is designed with brushed metal, loft ceilings, plate glass, and natural stone. The current terminal has an opener atmosphere that is reminiscent of larger hub airports as compared to the original architecture of the former Concourses A and B. Within the premises of WRWA, the airport manages three surface parking lots.
