Spokane International Airport

Spokane International Airport

Situated around 7 miles to the west-southwest of Spokane's downtown, Spokane International Airport is a commercial airport serving Spokane, Washington, in the United States. The Inland Northwest, which spans 30 counties and includes places like Spokane, the Tri-Cities in Eastern Washington, and Coeur d'Alene in North Idaho, is served by this airport as its main hub. Major Harold Geiger (1884–1927) was commemorated by the airport's previous name, Geiger Field, from which the airport's code, GEG, is derived. Regarding passenger enplanements as of 2015, Spokane International Airport (GEG) is the 70th busiest airport in the United States. It is the second busiest airport in Washington, with 4,131,266 passengers handled in total in 2023. Six airlines provide nonstop service to 15 airports across 13 markets, including GEG.

Previously known as Sunset Field, the War Department bought it from the county in 1941 and renamed it Geiger Field (IATA code GEG) in honor of Major Harold Geiger, an Army aviation pioneer who passed away in an accident in 1927. With new aircraft being acquired from Boeing in Seattle, Geiger Field served as a significant training airport for the Second Air Force during World War II, serving as a group training airfield for B-17 Flying Fortress heavy bombardment units. After Felts Field was replaced by Spokane Geiger Field in 1946, the airport gained its current name in 1960 when Air Canada began service to Calgary and the City of Spokane was granted Spokane Geiger Field under the Surplus Property Act. Warren C. Heylman and William Trogdon designed the current Concourse A and B complex, which opened in 1965.

Concourse C extension is part of the first phase of the project, which the airport started construction on October 20, 2022. In addition to adding 144,000 square feet and six new gates, the $150 million expansion will modernize the current terminal. An enhanced operations center and a consolidated TSA screening checkpoint for baggage claim are the main goals of the TREX program's second phase. The A/B and C concourses will be simpler to navigate thanks to this central link. Two paved runways are used by the airport.  Concourses A and B, located in the middle, Concourse C, located to the southwest, and the Ground Transportation Center, located to the north, make up the three main components of the Spokane International Airport passenger terminal facilities.
