Sacramento International Airport

Sacramento International Airport

Situated in Sacramento County, California, United States, and spanning 6,000 acres, Sacramento International Airport is an international airport 10.5 miles northwest of Downtown Sacramento. The Sacramento County Airport System is in charge of it, and it serves the Sacramento Metropolitan Area. A few of the attractions and adventures in Northern and Central California that can be reached from the airport are Heavenly Mountain Resort, Lake Tahoe, Yosemite National Park, Old Sacramento State Historic Park—which has a rich history of gold rushes, underground tunnels, floods, and fire—the California State Capitol, Wine Country, Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area, Cosumnes River Preserve, Hawver Cave—which has a lake inside—Sutter's Mill and Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park, and the Sacramento–San Joaquin River Delta.

Sacramento Metropolitan Airport reopened as Sacramento International Airport on October 21, 1967. Before this date, Sacramento Municipal Airport—now Sacramento Executive Airport—handled all commercial airline flights through the Sacramento region. The projected purchase of roughly 6,000 acres north of downtown Sacramento and the development of Sacramento Metropolitan Airport were viewed as excessive in 1957. The location was considered poorly positioned, the idea was judged dangerous, and the size was determined by exaggerated passenger predictions. The doubters were misguided. The 750,000 yearly passenger projection that was first given turned out to be modest. Over a million people used the airport in its first year of existence. When Sacramento Metropolitan Airport opened for business in 1967, it was the first entirely constructed public airport west of the Mississippi. Five airlines operated out of the airport at first: Pacific, PSA, United, Western, and West Coast.

The integrated rental car terminal and Terminal A opened in the 1990s (1998). Passenger traffic increased in the meanwhile. The name Sacramento Metropolitan Airport was changed to Sacramento International Airport. Technology advancements throughout time have altered the way the airport disseminated information to its patrons. April 1997 saw the debut of the Sacramento County Airport System's first website. On September 23, 2004, the Terminal A Parking Garage opened. In addition to public art ("Flying Gardens" by Dennis Oppenheim placed outside the garage and "Flying Carpet" by Seyed Alavi erected in the connected walkway), the six-story building had covered parking, a short stroll to the terminal, and other amenities. The 6,000-acre Sacramento International Airport features two parallel runways.
