Richmond International Airport

Richmond International Airport

Located in the unincorporated town of Sandston, Virginia, United States, Richmond International Airport is a combination civil-military airport (in Henrico County). The Commonwealth of Virginia's capital, Richmond, is located around 7 miles southeast of the airport. After Washington Reagan and Washington Dulles, Richmond International Airport is the busiest airport in the state and the busiest in central Virginia. A total of 2,500 acres make up RIC. By excellence, innovation, and convenience, RIC aims to give every consumer an extraordinary experience. The Commission supports competition among its nine airlines, which includes Allegiant, American Airlines, Breeze Airways, and Delta Air Lines, in order to fulfill its objective of giving the traveling public alternatives.

Richmond International Airport is owned and operated by the Capital Region Airport Commission (CRAC). The commission was created by the Virginia General Assembly in 1975, and it is supervised by the city of Richmond, as well as the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico. Seven airlines provide nonstop flights from RIC to 26 locations in the Greater Richmond Region. Richmond had significant expansion again in the early 2000s, and an announcement of a comprehensive redevelopment was made in 2005. RIC expanded its parking lot to 10,500 spots, installed 22 gates (including several non-jet bridge gates) to its single-story terminal, and built a new terminal roadway and air traffic control tower.  A central utilities plant will be built, security checkpoints will be widened, and the terminal building will undergo extensive renovations. Upper-level departures and lower-level arrivals will also be included.

The year 2016 saw Richmond record its second-highest annual passenger flow; in late 2018, the airport commenced a significant expansion. By adding 6 or 8 gates to its A Concourse, the number of gates grew from 22 to 28 or 30. In Concourse B, the airport increased the number of TSA screening lanes at the checkpoint from four to six. The extension of TSA lanes was finished in June 2019 after starting in the fall of 2018. The airport broke its previous record of 3,634,544 in 2007 by serving 3,657,479 passengers in 2017, which was a record at the time. RIC achieved a record-breaking 4,755,889 passengers in 2023. Airlines mostly operating domestic routes to cities in the South, Northeast, and Midwest serve RIC. They also offer connecting flights to key hubs for overseas destinations.
