Pittsburgh International Airport

The Pittsburgh International Airport, located in Findlay Township and Moon Township, Pennsylvania, is a civil-military international airport once known as Greater Pittsburgh Airport and then just Pittsburgh International Airport. Serving the Greater Pittsburgh Region and surrounding regions in West Virginia and Ohio, it is the main international airport located approximately 10 miles west of Pittsburgh's downtown. Passenger flights to locations across North America and Europe are available from the airport, which is owned and managed by the Allegheny County Airport Authority. Covering 10,000 acres, PIT features four runways.

The airport was first used by five airlines when it opened in 1952, and for more than 20 years, Trans World Airlines used it as a small hub. For the airport to become one of US Airways' primary hubs, it underwent an enormous $1 billion reconstruction and extension, for the most part built to specification. With its cutting-edge features like its underground tram system for passenger transportation, X-shaped gates that minimized the distance between gates, and a wide range of shopping options, the newly constructed airport, which opened in 1992, was dubbed the "airport of the future" by the New York Times and contributed to the advancement of modern airport design. The airport was a key pillar of the Pittsburgh economy, with traffic reaching its height in the late 1990s with 20 million passengers, and US Air reaching its peak in 2001 with 542 flights and 11,995 workers.

The airport installed its own microgrid in 2021, making it the first in the world to power the whole facility with solar and natural gas. Undergoing a $1.39 billion makeover, the airport will soon have a new check-in, security, and baggage claim facility next to the gates. The tram won't be necessary thanks to the renovations, and there will be more parking spots. It was stressed by officials that the improvements would better fit Pittsburgh than US Airways. After being first announced in 2017 and postponed because of the coronavirus epidemic, the renovations started up again in 2021, with an estimated 2025 opening date. Airlines will cover the majority of the project's expenditures; no municipal taxes will be used for this project.
