Till 1969, this airport was the Naval Air Station Sanford during World War II, which was the base for carrier-based attack and reconnaissance aircraft. Currently, Orlando Sanford International Airport is owned and operated by Sanford Airport Authority. The airport is the second biggest airport in the region of Orlando.
