With 19,618,838 passengers in 2021, it ranked eighth in the country and the state's busiest airport. The airport code MCO refers to McCoy Air Force Base, which was once known as the airport. McCoy Air Force Base was a Strategic Air Command (SAC) post that was shut down in 1975 as a part of a larger military withdrawal that followed the conclusion of the Vietnam War. The airport acts as a base of operations for Avelo Airlines, Breeze Airways, Frontier Airlines, Southwest Airlines, and Spirit Airlines; it also serves as a hub for Silver Airways and a focal city for JetBlue.
