Newark Liberty International Airport

Newark Liberty International Airport

The international airport known as Newark Liberty International Airport is located in the U.S. state of New Jersey, spanning the border between the cities of Elizabeth in Union County and Newark in Essex County. It is a significant entry point to locations in Europe, South America, Asia, and Oceania and is situated about 4.5 miles south of downtown Newark and 9 miles west-southwest of Manhattan. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey operates the airport; the two cities have joint ownership of it. In the New York airport system, it is the second busiest airport, right behind John F. Kennedy International Airport but in front of LaGuardia Airport.

Situated close to the Newark Airport Interchange, U.S. Routes 1 and 9, which have connections to U.S. Routes 22, 81, and 21, as well as the intersection of Interstates 95 and 78 (both parts of the New Jersey Turnpike), are furthermore accessible from the airport. The rail station at Newark Liberty International Airport is connected to the terminals by AirTrain Newark. Northeast Corridor Line and North Jersey Coast Line trains operated by NJ Transit service the stop. The station is also the destination for Amtrak's Northeast Regional and Keystone Service trains. Built in 1928 by the City of Newark, the airport was used by the Army Air Corps in World War II. It was situated on 68 acres of marshland. Located next to Port Newark and US Route 1, the airport was built.

A terminal structure, a control tower, an instrument runway, and an air cargo center were built when the Port Authority gained management of the facility in 1948. In 1980, Building One, the airport's 1935 structure, was listed to the National Register of Historic Places. At 43.4 million passengers in 2022, the airport ranked 23rd in the globe and 13th in the country in terms of passenger volume. With 49.1 million passengers served, 2023 was the biggest year to date. United Airlines' largest hub in terms of available seat miles is Newark Liberty International, which serves 50 operators. As the major tenant at EWR, the airline serves over 63% of all passengers using the airport. Operating out of three buildings totaling over 2 million square feet of airport land are United and FedEx Express, which is its second-largest tenant.
