Myrtle Beach International Airport

Myrtle Beach International Airport

The public-use, county-owned Myrtle Beach International Airport is situated in Horry County, South Carolina, three miles southwest of the city's core business district. The Myrtle Beach Jetport (1974–1989) was its previous name. It was situated on the grounds of the defunct Myrtle Beach Air Force Base, which is currently home to The Market Common retail center. As to the FAA's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021, the facility is classified as a small-hub major commercial service facility. Almost 2.4 million people arrived and left Myrtle Beach's airport in 2018, making it the second busiest in South Carolina behind Charleston. Previously an unauthorized website operated by an airport employee, flymyrtlebeach.com has become the official website of the airport since 2006. The airport unveiled a renovated website and new logo in July 2012.

On land that had been an army post, an airport was established in 1948 after the federal government surrendered the property via the Surplus Property Act. These monies were used for Crescent Beach's Horry County Jetport, which relocated to the northeast of the base in 1958 following an agreement for shared military and civilian usage of the facility. The land surrounding Myrtle Beach Airport was acquired by the City of Myrtle Beach in 1977. Up until 1993, MYR and Myrtle Beach AFB shared use of the main runway, which resulted in a daily cap of thirty landings for civil operations and sparked a local business drive to construct a brand-new airport. The airport in Myrtle Beach became an international airport on April 1, 1996.

The 3,795-acre airport has one runway and is situated at a 25-foot elevation. Dr. Wilford Leroy Harrelson was the first mayor of Myrtle Beach, serving twice, from January 1942 to December 1943, and from March 1938 to December 1939. His name is attached to the Terminal Building. In honor of him, the airport terminal was renamed and the city purchased property for it during his first term. At the base of runway 36, MYR features a helipad that is mostly utilized by charter tour operators. Originally located at the airport's entrance, the air cargo facility is now mostly utilized for storage by airport maintenance after it was closed down. Parking and dining facilities are available at the airport.
