Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport

Located five nautical miles south of Milwaukee, Wisconsin's downtown, lies the civil-military Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has classified it as a medium-hub major commercial service facility in its National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2023–2027. With five runways made of concrete and asphalt, Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport spans 2,314 acres. General Billy Mitchell, a Milwaukee native and man widely considered to be the founding father of the US Air Force, is honored by the airport's name. Mitchell International Airport serves visitors from Southern, Eastern, and Northern Illinois in addition to serving as the main airport for Milwaukee. The National Weather Service, whose area headquarters is situated in Sullivan, has been using the airport's weather station as the official point for Milwaukee weather observations and records since March 1941.

On July 3, 1919, Milwaukee officially joined the aviation age when it opened Butler Airport, the first airport run by the county, on the present location of James Currie Park and Golf Course, which is situated in the northwest part of Milwaukee County. It was in this modest airfield hangar that the Lawson Airliner was put together. The aircraft took off on a demonstration trip to the US east coast on August 27, 1919. The Works Progress Administration built a new two-story terminal building between 1938 and July 1940, during the latter part of the Great Depression. The Milwaukee County Airport was renamed "Billy Mitchell Field" in 1941 in honor of Milwaukee's military benefactor, Brigadier General William "Billy" Mitchell. To offer cargo carriers security and ground support services, a brand-new Airport Systems Cargo Complex opened its doors in October 1989. To better reflect the airport's location and anchor city, the name of the airport was changed to "Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport" in 2019.
