Located in Los Angeles County, California, the United States, Long Beach airfield is a public airfield three miles northeast of Long Beach's downtown. In honor of the local aviator Earl Daugherty, it is also known as Daugherty Field. JetBlue used the airport as its operational base; however, on October 6, 2020, the airline ceased operations and relocated to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic that was still in effect. As a result, Southwest Airlines rose to prominence as the main carrier at the airport. It was classified as a key commercial service airport under the 2011–2015 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. According to data kept by the Federal Aviation Administration, 1,413,251 passengers were landed at the airport in 2008, 1,401,903 in 2009, and 1,451,404 in 2010.
Long Beach Airport serves the Los Angeles MSA and is situated close to the boundary between Orange County and Los Angeles County. The airport experiences greater domestic commercial passenger, freight, military, and general aviation traffic because of its near proximity to the busier and larger LAX, which is located 20 miles away. Due to its proximity to several residential areas, the airport is subject to one of the harshest noise restrictions in the nation. At 1.4 million passengers, it is the tenth busiest airport in California in terms of boardings. The other airlines that operate out of Long Beach include American, Delta, Hawaiian, and Southwest; JetBlue operated the most flights out of the airport as of May 2018. The Long Beach Airport employs three full-time noise specialists as part of a vigorous initiative to reduce noise.
The Streamline Moderne terminal at Long Beach Airport is a historical monument that underwent renovations at the beginning of 2013. At Long Beach Airport/Daugherty Field, ATP flying School runs a professional commercial pilot flying training program. The 1,166-acre Long Beach Airport is situated at a height of 60 feet. Three asphalt runways are present. On the first floor of Lot B, the Airport provides 12 ChargePoint charging points for electric vehicles on a first-come, first-served basis. The Airport Ground Transportation Center, which is situated right across the street from the terminal, is home to car rental agencies. At the taxi stop outside the terminal, close to Parking Structure A, taxis are available.
