The main airport on the Island of Hawaii is Kona International Airport at Keahole (KOA), which is situated near Kailua-Kona, Hawaii, in the United States. The resorts in North Kona and South Kohala, as well as the Leeward (western) portion of Hawaii Island, are served by the airport. Hilo International Airport, located on the windward (eastern) side of the island, is the other international airport that serves Hawaii. It is included as a small-hub major commercial service facility in the Federal Aviation Administration's National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025. The passenger terminals and the access route are situated to the south of general aviation, cargo, and associated facilities.
Situated at a height of 47 feet on the island of Hawaii, Kona International Airport spans 3,450 acres of land around seven miles northwest of Kailua-Kona. General aviation, commuter/air taxi, international, interisland, and domestic flights are accommodated at the airport. In addition to an 11,000-foot runway, KOA features a complex of buildings along its eastern boundary that are used for general aviation operations, air cargo and postal handling, passenger arrivals and departures, and airport support. From the Queen Kaahumanu Highway, an access route leads to these facilities. The entrance roadway at the passenger terminals creates a one-way circle that encloses the public parking lots and rental vehicle check-in areas. Halfway between the passenger terminals and the main highway, along the airport access lane, is another complex of buildings used mostly by rental vehicle firms for general maintenance, storage, and returns.
The Ellison Onizuka Kona International Airport offers a wide range of food and shopping opportunities. Flight schedules determine the operating hours. In order to use free Wi-Fi at the airport, visitors must choose the KOA Free Wi-Fi network. The ticket lounges, passenger boarding areas, concessions, and baggage claim facilities are all housed in an array of open-air pavilions that give Kona International Airport its distinctive architecture. Kona International Airport lacks loading bridges and level entrance jetways in line with its open-air design. Using foldable steps, passengers board the flight from the ground level. Boarding lift service, which may be scheduled through your airline, is available to those with limited mobility. The public parking area across from the terminal has accessible parking places right next to the crosswalks.
