Glenn John The distance between Columbus International Airport and the Ohio city center is six miles east. The Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which also has management responsibility for Rickenbacker International Airport and Bolton Field, is in charge of managing what was once known as Port Columbus International Airport. The airport's original name, Columbus Municipal Hangar, is represented by the airport code "CMH." Glenn John The main use of Columbus International Airport is for passenger travel. It offers nine carriers 148 daily nonstop flights to 31 locations. In honor of astronaut and four-term U.S. senator John Glenn, the Ohio General Assembly enacted a measure on May 25, 2016, renaming the airport from Port Columbus International Airport to its present name. In May 2016, the nine-member board of the airport voted in favor of the name change. On June 14, 2016, Ohio Governor John Kasich signed the measure into law, and 90 days later, the name change became formally recognized. New signage with the airport's new name was unveiled along with a celebration of the rebranding on June 28, 2016.
Charles Lindbergh chose the location of the airport, which was opened as the Columbus Municipal Hangar on July 8, 1929, as the eastern air end of the Transcontinental Air Transport air-rail line from New York to Los Angeles. From New York, passengers used the Pennsylvania Railroad's Airway Limited for an overnight ride to Columbus. From Columbus, they proceeded to Waynoka, Oklahoma, via air; from Waynoka, they took the Atchison, Topeka & Santa Fe rail again to Clovis, New Mexico; and from Clovis, they took an air trip to Los Angeles. The hangars are still in service, although the original terminal structure is abandoned. Only the hangars are still standing. The majority of the building was seized by the US Navy during World War II, and in 1942 Naval Air Station Columbus was founded. In 1946, NAS Columbus was closed and turned back over to civilian control.
There are 34 gates at John Glenn Columbus International Airport spread over one terminal with three concourses. The airport's customs facility is located in Concourse C, where non-precleared foreign planes are handled. There are two fixed-base operators at the airport that provide services such courtesy transportation, conference rooms, crew lounges, nap rooms, showers, fuel (jet and avgas), and aircraft parking.
