Situated three miles southwest of Fairbanks' core business area, Fairbanks International Airport is a publicly owned airport owned by the state of Alaska. The city of Fairbanks is part of the Fairbanks North Star Borough. South Van Horn census-designated place is where it's located. During the summer months, Condor operated weekly flights to Frankfurt, making Fairbanks the smallest city in the US with regularly scheduled nonstop foreign flights. As of right present, only Air North is available for scheduled charter flights (to Canada). 90% of the northern industrialized hemisphere can be reached in 9.5 hours by plane from Fairbanks International Airport, which also has a thriving local market and direct international passenger and freight traffic. We're sure we can manage everything that flies safely and effectively since we have an 11,800-foot runway, people and facilities for processing in both the local and international markets, and sufficient of parking for all kinds of aircraft.
When air transportation was needed, early Alaskan Territory pilots usually made due without constructed landing strips, bringing their aircraft down wherever it was needed. At an airstrip known as Weeks Field, or Weeks Ball Park, aviation service was first provided in the Fairbanks region in 1923. Since Carl Ben Eielson's 1923 launch of Alaskan Airways from Fairbanks, this multipurpose facility has grown in significance both within the community and beyond the Alaska aviation industry. From the airport's inception until Alaska was awarded statehood in 1959, it was managed by the federal government. The airport has grown in recent decades in line with the community's expansion. After Lufthansa Cargo began operating out of the airport in September 1990, regularly scheduled service was once again offered, having been halted in the spring of 1984 for scheduled foreign travel. Over the past 20 years, there have been significant advances in both the air and ground side of facilities.
The 1948-built old terminal was demolished by the airport on October 11, 2009, after construction of a new one was finished. Based to contemporary TSA guidelines, the new terminal was constructed. There are now six jet-bridges at the main terminal, up from five, in addition to improved security and architectural design. Six gates are for major carriers and two are for commuter carriers within the terminal building, which is located on the northwest side of the airport. It boasts four runways. Spread across 3,470 acres, Fairbanks International Airport is located 439 feet above mean sea level.
