In 1946, La Plata County Airport began to serve commercial aircraft. The airport was closed in the summer of 1977 in order to extend the runway to accommodate jet traffic and enlarge the terminal building. Then, in the fall of 1977, Frontier Airlines started flying Boeing 737 aircraft to the airport. In the 1990s, the airport had a significant surge in ski travel and the addition of American Airlines, which used McDonnell Douglas MD-80 planes, leading to yet another major expansion of the terminal. The airport kept enticing new airlines to serve it and drawing travelers away from the neighboring Farmington, New Mexico-serving Four Corners Regional Airport during the 2000s.

The airport is situated at a height of 6,685 feet on 1,281 acres. There is just one runway there. The airport in Durango-La Plata County has Wi-Fi throughout. All around the terminal building, free internet connection is available. The terminal is only open to authorized assistance dogs or travelers with pets.  At the north end of the rental car lot is a nice grassy area where you may take your dog for a stroll.  Here is a clean-up station for your convenience. The building's public toilets are entirely at grade, have grab rails, and have wheelchair-accessible stalls. There are five plane stands, three boarding gates, a pre-security cafeteria, and a gift store at the airport. Free wi-fi internet is available all across the passenger terminal.
