Located seven miles northwest of Dothan, a city mostly in Houston County, in Dale County, Alabama, lies Dothan Regional Airport, a public airport serving the aviation industry. It was designated as a key commercial service airport (more than 10,000 enplanements annually) in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2011–2015. Records from the Federal Aviation Administration show that the airport handled 47,859 passenger boardings (enplanements) in 2008, 42,071 in 2009, and 41,453 in 2010. Delta Connection operates twice daily flights to Atlanta utilizing CRJ-700 and CRJ-900 aircraft, which are the only commercial airline services available. Not about 40% of Dothan's flights are general aviation, while more than 50% are military training exercises from neighboring Fort Novosel, NAS Whiting Field, and NAS Pensacola.
In 1941, Dothan Regional Airport was established as a part of an enlarging project by the US Army Air Corps. Napier Field consented in 1946 to provide Houston County and the City of Dothan access to the airstrip and its upgrades. The distance between the Dothan Regional Airport and the city's major business center is around seven miles to the northwest. Situated in the municipal borders of Dothan inside Dale County, it is conveniently accessible to about 500,000 people who live in Alabama, Georgia, and Florida. The 1,200 acres that make up Dothan Regional Airport are home to an 8500-foot all-weather runway, a 5000-foot secondary runway, and a terminal building that spans 27,000 square feet. In addition to having state-of-the-art firefighting equipment and current navigational facilities necessary to operate all sorts of aircraft in all types of weather into and out of the Wiregrass area, the airport runs with full-time police and fire presence.
It is the Dothan-Houston County Airport Authority, Inc. that owns and runs Dothan Regional Airport. That can sustain itself. The travelers that utilize Dothan Regional Airport provide the airport with income. At the airport are about twenty different companies or organizations in operation. For the use of the facility, these organizations pay the landing fees, rent, and other costs. These funds are used to resurface runways and taxiways, buy new safety equipment, and increase security measures, among other federally required or suggested upgrades and improvements, all of which are implemented back into the facility. A police agency patrols the parking lot, which is near to the terminal. A fast, easy, and secure alternative is to leave your automobile at the airport.
