The Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport is situated in Okaloosa County, Florida, in close proximity to the communities of Destin and Fort Walton Beach, as well as Eglin Air Force Base. It is situated next to the city of Valparaiso. Prior to February 17, 2015, the airport was known as Northwest Florida Regional Airport, and prior to September 2008, it was known as Okaloosa Regional Airport. Destin is less than 16 miles from the airport, and it takes around 25 minutes to get there. The only kind of aviation authorized is commercial. Business and general aviation aircraft must utilize the neighboring Destin Executive Airport for their non-commercial operations. The 6,500 acres that Fort Walton Beach Airport and Eglin AFB share with each other are home to two runways.
The airport features a passenger terminal spanning 116,000 square feet (10,800 square meters) that includes three ground-level commuter gates and five second-level gates equipped with passenger jet ways. In November 2004, the terminal with two levels opened. Not long later, the original terminal building was dismantled. There is ticketing, baggage claim, and upper and lower courses with gates within the terminal. Gates A1, A2, and A3 as well as waiting spaces and a concession area are located on the first level. There are gates at B1, B2, B3, B4, B5, and B6 on the second-level concourse. Because there aren't many flights in the slow season, B3 isn't used very often. Because there is no jetway, B5 is hardly frequently utilized. The airplane must be boarded quickly and safely, but passengers must down a little stairway. There is also a restaurant and concession spaces on the second-level concourse.
The terminal may be accessed by State Road 85. The terminus or loop is straight ahead, parking facilities are to the left, and the rental car return is to the right. There are three arrival-departure lanes in front of the terminal and two pass-through lanes on the left of the airport ring road. The loop road is a ¾ mile long, two-lane asphalt road. There are both long-term and short-term parking options. As part of the new terminal development, the parking facilities were upgraded at the beginning of the 2000s. The 300 feet required between parked cars and the terminal building is satisfied by these, which were created with the TSA's "300-foot rule" in mind.
