Des Moines International Airport

Des Moines International Airport

Five miles southwest of Iowa's capital city of Des Moines sits the combined commercial-military Des Moines International Airport. Two runways, forty-six buildings, seven parking structures, and the terminal are all located on the 2,600-acre airport property. American, Allegiant, Delta, Frontier, Southwest, and United are the six commercial airlines that operate out of DSM. The Des Moines Airport Authority oversees the airport. A key commercial service airport, according to the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2017–2021. A record 2.48 million people used the airport in 2016, an increase of 5% over 2015. A record 2.92 million passengers passed through DSM in 2019. The Iowa Air National Guard's 132nd Wing is housed at the airfield.

A number of tiny airports for general aviation and airmail operated in the Des Moines region in the 1920s. A statute authorizing communities to issue bonds and collect taxes in order to construct municipal airports was approved by the Iowa General Assembly in 1929. Not long after the airport was finished, the first passenger terminal was constructed. In 1950, a new terminal took its place, and it has since undergone many renovations and expansions. Constructed in 1970, the current concourses accompanied the terminal's refurbishment. The Parks Department of the City of Des Moines previously had control over the airport. The city created a distinct Aviation Department in the 1960s, and an independent Aviation Policy Advisory Board in 1982. In 1986, the airport's name was changed to Des Moines International Airport to reflect the establishment of a US Customs Service post there. The airport handled a record 2.48 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 5% over 2015.

The airport's interior remodeling project started in 2009 and ended in 2010. In order to facilitate future concourse development, a new bathroom was also installed to concourse C. The airport added more processing space in addition to updating its luggage handling equipment. Apart from the renovations within the passenger terminal, the airport was also constructing new parking facilities and a car rental facility. The airport is located at a height of 958 feet on 2,625 acres. There are two runways on it. Endeavor Air has a repair base at the airport.
