Delta County Airport

Delta County Airport

Southwest of Escanaba's core business center is Delta County airfield, a public-use airfield owned by the county and situated at 3300 Airport Road. The airport has Class B Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF) in order to comply with federal aviation regulations and is currently a commercial service airport approved under Federal Aviation Regulation Part 139. It is well known that the firefighting foam AFFF contains PFAS chemicals. The airport provides commercial air transportation to Minneapolis-Saint Paul, Minnesota, and Detroit, Michigan. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) awarded the Delta County Airport a PFAS grant in September 2020 so that it may evaluate places where historically AFFF was stored and used. Three places on the airport grounds had their soil and groundwater examined by the airport.

Serving the region around Escanaba, Michigan, Delta County Airport provides a number of services to make sure that travelers have a convenient and enjoyable travel experience. One major advantage for vacationers is free parking, which is one of these services. In addition, the airport offers free WiFi so that travelers may keep in touch, work, or amuse themselves as they wait for their flights. Wheelchair accessibility is provided so that all passengers may easily use the airport, even in cases where help is needed.  For general aviation purposes, the airport has a fixed-base operator that provides fuel, general maintenance, parking for aircraft, rental and courtesy automobiles, and a crew lounge.

The airport also has a cozy waiting room where travelers may unwind before boarding their aircraft. Although it might not have as many facilities as larger airports, the airport is nevertheless a handy option for visitors in the area since it prioritizes passenger comfort and necessary services. The flow of groundwater goes toward Lake Michigan's Portage Bay. Portage Creek empties into Portage Bay after passing past the airport's grounds.

In Escanaba, SkyWest Airlines manages flights for Delta Air Lines. Daily flights are operated out of the airport to Minneapolis and Detroit. When the airline began operating flights to Detroit as a "tag flight" with a stop in Pellston, claiming personnel shortages, it caused controversy. The airline resumed nonstop flights after just one month of these services. But in December 2022, the airline said that it will start running tag flights between Escanaba and Iron Mountain on its way to one of its hubs.
