On California's untamed north coast, close to the Oregon border, sits Crescent City, home of the Del Norte County Airport at Jack McNamara Field. The Border Coast Regional Airport Authority (BCRAA), a Joint Powers Authority, oversees the airport on behalf of the County of Del Norte under a master lease arrangement. CEC is the three-letter code that the International Air Transport Association issued to the airport. Advanced Air, the community's Essential Air Service provider, operates 30-passenger regional aircraft on daily scheduled flights from CEC to Oakland International airfield (OAK). CEC is an airfield for general aviation and commercial aviation. The airport also houses hangars for general aviation aircraft, emergency air medical transportation, express air shipping, an Aircraft Rescue and Fire Fighting (ARFF) station, and an airport Fixed Base Operator (FBO) run by Cal Ore Life Flight with mobile aircraft fueling and self-service fueling.
The airstrip served as Crescent City Outlying Field in support of Naval Air Station Alameda and a naval radio station at Point Saint George during World War II. Radio intercept was carried out using high-frequency direction finding (HFDF). These coastal locations were capable of tracking merchant marine vessels and Japanese warships all the way to the Western Pacific. Point Arguello, the Farallon Islands, and San Diego were the locations of the other Californian stations. Another station was located near Bainbridge Island, Washington. The spring of 2019 saw the completion of a new passenger terminal. The BCRAA headquarters and local TSA and airline offices are located in the new terminal. When scheduled airline flights are operating, Cal Ore Life Flight FBO office has vehicle rentals from Avis and Budget available, as well as from the terminal during scheduled airline operations.
At 544 acres and 61 feet above sea level, the airport is rather large. Two asphalt runways are present. 12,565 aircraft operated at the airport in the year that ended July 31, 2019, with an average of 34 each day: 72% of them were general aviation, 27% were air taxis, and 1% were military. The airport originally housed 26 aircraft, of which 35% were multi-engine and 65% were single-engine. When scheduled air carrier service is in operation, rental cars are available in the passenger terminal. There is no cost for parking for visitors as this facility is free.
