Decatur Airport

Located in Macon County, Illinois, five miles east of Decatur, is the public airfield known as Decatur airfield. The Decatur Park District is the owner of the airport. The Essential Air Service program of the federal government subsidizes airline service at a cost of $2,667,922 (per year). It is classified as a regional general aviation facility under the Federal Aviation Administration's (FAA) National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2021–2025. Out of the twelve commercial airports in Illinois, it is the eleventh busiest. The Decatur Airport Terminal Building is a 24,000 square foot, ground floor structure that has administrative offices, a baggage claim area, plenty of seats for passengers and guests, and airline and car rental kiosks.

Decatur Airport is located at an elevation of 682 feet (208 meters) on 2,100 acres. Three runways are present. The airport saw 29,285 aircraft operations in the 12 months that ended on December 31, 2020, or an average of 80 per day: 78% of them were general aviation, 15% were military, 4% were air taxis, and 3% were commercial airlines. This airfield was home to 62 aircraft as of April 2022: 12 military and 50 single-engine aircraft. The passenger terminal at Decatur Airport is 2,200 square meters (24,000 square feet) and includes airline counters, a café, a baggage claim area, and counters for vehicle rentals. At the airport is an Army Aviation Support Facility (AASF) run by the Illinois Army National Guard. Three permanent structures and one temporary building make up the facility's 10-acre footprint.

The U.S. Department of Transportation was informed by SkyWest (operating as United Express) on March 11, 2022, that it planned to terminate its Essential Air Service into DEC in June 2022, meaning that there will be no scheduled passenger service at the airport after that date. Nevertheless, SkyWest's request to discontinue service to Decatur has been denied by the Department of Transportation. Decatur Public Transit System offers public transportation to the airport. Route 3 services the airport on Sundays, while Route 12 runs from downtown Decatur to the airport Monday through Saturday. The convenience of close-in parking and free long-term parking is sure to please visitors and travelers. There is easy parking just next to the airport terminal building. This area is open for overnight, short-term, and pick-up/drop-off parking. Extended-stay visitors are requested to park at the airport lot away from the facility.
