Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

Cleveland Hopkins International Airport

The main airport for Greater Cleveland and Northeast Ohio is Cleveland Hopkins International Airport, a city-owned facility located in Cleveland, Ohio, in the United States. According to passenger counts, it is the biggest and busiest airport in the state and in the top fifty in the nation. Situated nine miles southwest of Downtown Cleveland in the Hopkins district of Cleveland, it shares a boundary with the Glenn Research Center, one of NASA's ten primary field locations. Several improvements that are now customary were pioneered by the airport. It was the first airport to include a two-story layout that divided arrivals and departures, as well as an air traffic control tower. Additionally, it was the first airport in North America to have a direct rail transport line connection.

Between the end of World War II to the middle of the 1980s, Cleveland served as United Airlines' hub. In the 1990s and 2000s, Continental Airlines took over as the main airline at the airport when United Airlines moved out. United discontinued its Cleveland hub following its 2010 merger with Continental; nonetheless, the airline remains the largest by passenger volume at the airport, with maintenance facilities, a flight attendant base, and pilot base. Concourse D was shuttered after United ceased utilizing Cleveland as a hub, but the airline continued to pay the facility's lease. However, low-cost airlines, who had previously had some of the highest average costs in the nation, were able to join the market as a result of United's hub shutdown. After United shuttered the hub, passenger traffic quickly increased to its pre-closure level.

There are 43 destinations served by Cleveland Hopkins' nonstop passenger service. The downtown Burke Lakefront Airport is likewise operated by the Cleveland Department of Port Control, which also manages Cleveland Hopkins. Cleveland Hopkins is made out of a single, two-story passenger terminal that was finished in 1978 and refurbished in 2016. There are four concourses; three of them are in service at the moment. The airport started talking about a $2 billion makeover in 2022. In order to accommodate more flights, the airport planned to increase gate waiting spaces, install eight new gates, upgrade the checked baggage inspection system, and enlarge security and check-in counters. Concourse D will be replaced with a new concourse, Concourses A and C will be restored, and Concourse B will be reconstructed. Runways at the airport number three.
