Chico Regional Airport, California

Chico Regional Airport

Situated in Butte County, California, the United States, Chico Regional Airport, originally known as Chico Municipal Airport, lies four miles (6 km) north of Chico. Two runways, one helipad, and 1,475 acres make up the airport. Fuel, maintenance, flight instruction, and charter flights are offered by its fixed-base operator, Northgate Aviation. The discontinuation of SkyWest Airlines' service to San Francisco at the end of 2014 resulted in the airport's closure, despite it still being an operating airport that complies with Federal Aviation Regulations Part 139 criteria. Chico Municipal Airport will become Chico Regional Airport, according to a vote approved by the Chico City Council on November 15, 2022.

In the late 1930s, five miles (8 km) north of the city, the City of Chico constructed a tiny airport on 160 acres of property, which it leased to a fixed-base operator. The Chico City Council signed a lease with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (representing the War Department) on September 11, 1941, for the use of 1,045 acres of property for $1 per year with an option to buy, expanding the airport in 1941 to assist fulfill the demands of the American military. The field's service roads and utilities were also supplied by the city. As at other locations, four to five million dollars were set aside for the expeditious building of all necessary facilities. In the end, 140 buildings were constructed along with aprons, runways, and service roads.

The Air Force said on January 30, 1959, that it would study the area around Beale Air Force Base to see if missile sites would be feasible. There were two mishaps at the Chico missile facility in 1962. A powerful explosion shook launcher 1 at the site on May 24, during a contractor review, destroying a Titan I and severely damaging the silo. On June 6, there was unrest once more when a worker was killed in a flash fire at another silo. Following an examination, the Air Force determined that a clogged valve and obstructed vent were the cause of the two distinct explosions. After repairs, the silo was reopened for business. All three of the launch silos are now capped, however there has been some development on the launch location, including the construction of a retention pond, some trees, and single-story houses. It looks to be in use for transporting some kind of grading/quarrying material to Chico area building sites.
