Chicago Rockford International Airport, Illinois

A commercial airport in Rockford, Illinois, 68 miles northwest of Chicago, is called Chicago Rockford International Airport (RFD). It is also known as Rockford International Airport, Chicago Rockford, or by its IATA call letters. The airport was constructed in 1946 on the site of the historic Camp Grant complex, which functioned as one of the main training sites for the US Army in both World Wars. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) designated it as a non-hub primary commercial service facility in its National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2023–2027.

The airport now has passenger service from Allegiant Air, which operates year-round flights to six locations, providing an alternate site for leisure tourists. At 103,000 passengers in 2021, Rockford Airport—the third-busiest airport in Chicago, Illinois—was operating. Among the cargo airports with the quickest rate of growth worldwide is RFD. With approximately 3.4 billion pounds of cargo handled, the airport is the 14th busiest cargo airport in the US. Its primary focus is cargo operations. At the airport is UPS Airlines' main hub. Moreover, Amazon Air flies into the airport. Cargo flights from China and Germany were drawn to the cargo operations in the 2020s, which experienced significant growth. The increase of flights from Braniff, Mid-Continent, and Ozark in the 1950s led to the installation of the airport's first control tower. After radar was added to the tower in the 1970s, the airport quickly started running around-the-clock.

The Rockford airport has hosted airshows in a number of capacities, with several of them becoming to be among the biggest in Northern Illinois. After outgrowing the smaller Wisconsin airport, the Experimental Aircraft Association (EAA) relocated its yearly fly-in from Timmerman Field in Milwaukee to the Greater Rockford Airport in 1959. Attendance began at 1000 in 1960 and continued to climb annually throughout the 1960s. The EAA fly-in in Rockford had outgrown the Rockford airport, therefore 1969 would be its last year. Airfest declared its cancellation indefinitely on December 16, 2016. It said the event could no longer take place because the airport was too crowded. With two runways, Chicago Rockford International Airport occupies 2,900 acres. The Rockford Mass Transit District has a public transportation system that goes to the airport. From the airport, Route 7 travels to Rockford's downtown.
