North Charleston, South Carolina, USA is home to Charleston International Airport, a hybrid civil-military airport. Joint Base Charleston and the Charleston County Aviation Authority have a joint-use agreement that governs the operation of the airport. It is the busiest airport in South Carolina; in 2023, it handled over 6.1 million passengers, the largest year ever recorded. About 12 miles (19 km) northwest of Charleston's downtown is where the airport is situated in North Charleston. Breeze Airways uses the airport as a focal city. Additionally, the Boeing factory that assembles the 787 Dreamliner is located there.
After being established in 1928, the Charleston Airport Corporation bought 700 acres of property that had been owned by a mining business. The City of Charleston issued bonds in 1931 to purchase a part of the property for passenger service, despite the fact that it had first been created privately. Three runways were paved and equipped with illumination for use at night in less than a decade. Although civilian service was permitted to continue using the airstrip, control of the airfield was transferred to the United States Army during World War II. The airport was briefly used for civilian purposes after the war. A new passenger terminal was constructed in 1949. After the City of Charleston closed its two other nearby airports, the Charleston County Aviation Authority took control of the airport's civilian sections in 1979. On property that Georgia Pacific had purchased, the modern terminal at the airport's southernmost point was constructed in the 1980s.
As a second final assembly location for its commercial 787 Dreamliner aircraft, Boeing stated in October 2009 that it will construct a sizable factory on 265 acres at the airport. In July 2011, the facility commenced restricted operations, and in April 2012, it successfully launched its initial aircraft. A 20-year master plan for airport expansion was unveiled in 2022 by the airport authority. The proposal called for building an extra concourse, adding up to 11 more gates, adding more plane stands, and increasing the amount of space available for parking. The airport is divided into four main areas: the general aviation sector to the east, the airline terminal to the south, the military area to the west, and the Boeing assembly facility to the south-east.
