Cape Cod Gateway Airport

Cape Cod Gateway Airport

A commercial and general aviation airport serving Boston, New York, and the islands of Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket is Cape Cod Gateway Airport, which is situated near Hyannis, Massachusetts, on Cape Cod. The Barnstable Municipal Airport Commission, together with airport personnel, oversee its management on behalf of the Town of Barnstable. Along with other charter, business, and general aviation aircraft operators, the airport, which occupies 623 acres, is home to Cape Air and Nantucket Airlines. In peak season, JetBlue offers daily flights to JFK in New York.

The Town of Barnstable acquired control of the original Hyannis Airport, which had a single grass runway when it opened in 1928, during the 1930s. It was extended to three 4,000-foot runways for the Army Air Corps during World War II, when planes were using it for anti-submarine patrol. Later, the airport was turned over to the Navy for pilot training. The town reclaimed the airport after the war, and it now serves the whole Cape Cod region as a municipal airport with two runways. In addition to general aviation and scheduled commercial aircraft, the airport also handles charter flights. Island Airlines, a commuter airline located on Nantucket, used Barnstable Municipal Airport as a hub until it was shut down in 2015.

The airport's mission has changed over time to accommodate Cape Cod and visiting aircraft operators. In 1981, it was renamed Barnstable Municipal Airport–Boardman/Polando Field in commemoration of the first two pilots in history to fly 5,000 miles (8,000 km) nonstop: Russell Boardman and John Polando, both of whom were from Massachusetts. In order to improve name awareness for users who are not from Cape Cod and are unfamiliar with the word Barnstable, the airport renamed itself as the Cape Cod Gateway Airport on January 1, 2021.

The airport now has a 35,000 square foot passenger terminal, an 85-foot air traffic control tower, a large parking area, newly constructed aircraft ramps and taxiways, a maintenance facility, an aviation fuel farm, and an airport emergency firefighting team. A portion of the airport's land is leased to more than 40 private tenants for hangar space. A TSA security checkpoint, car rental companies, art galleries and shops, airline ticket kiosks, and a flight tracking system that provides real-time images of arriving and departing planes are all available to assist passengers.
