California Redwood Coast-Humboldt County Airport

In McKinleyville, California, the California Redwood Coast - Humboldt County Airport, sometimes called Arcata-Eureka Airport or Arcata Airport, is located in Humboldt County and is 8 miles (13 km) north of Arcata and 15 miles (24 km) north of Eureka. Right now, Avelo and United Airlines fly there. The airport in question is classified as a Nonhub major commercial service airport under the 2011–2015 National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems. For civil airplanes entering in the United States, the airport is a federally authorized port of entry. The main facilities and command center of US Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay, which offers law enforcement and rescue services to the area north of the San Francisco Bay Area, are located at the airport.

In order to test defogging technologies, the US Navy constructed the airport during World War II. As the Arcata navy Auxiliary Air Station (NAAS), it provided assistance to the Naval Air Station Alameda and served as the headquarters for the Eureka division of the navy local defense troops for the 12th Naval District. Using Ground-Controlled Approach (GCA) radar, Instrument Landing System (ILS), and Fog Investigation and Dispersal Operation (FIDO) oil-burners close to the runway, a Southwest Airlines Douglas DC-3 performed the first blind landing by a scheduled commercial aircraft in history in December 1947. At the frequently foggy airfield, the airline had completed 1,200 regular instrument landings by the next year.

Both of the airport's runways are asphalt. The California Coastal Commission oversees the airport, and any significant alterations, such rezoning or installing fence, need their permission. Central Avenue is crossed by the runway 32 approach route. Drivers were put in danger by the strobe lights' glare, which directs planes to the runway. This was particularly true in the rain, when the strobes' strength rose and the road reflected the flashing lights. The strobes were modified with baffles to prevent light beams from beaming on the road while still directing airplanes. For United Airlines, scheduled flights are currently operated by SkyWest Airlines, which code-shares as United Express and operates three or four nonstop daily flights to SFO on Canadair CRJ-200 and Embraer 175 regional jets, as well as one nonstop daily flight to Denver International Airport and LAX.
