Boulder Municipal Airport

Boulder Municipal Airport

Boulder, a city in Boulder County, Colorado, United States, has a public airport called Boulder Municipal airfield. It is situated 3 miles (4.8 km) northeast of the city's downtown. The City of Boulder owns it, and general aviation is its primary usage. Excellent conditions for soaring are provided by its location in the foothills of the Rockies, east of the continental divide, and there is a lot of gliding activity. It serves as the foundation of Boulder's Soaring Society. The oldest public airport in Colorado still in operation is Boulder Municipal Airport, which was established in 1928. When playing the University of Colorado, several collegiate basketball teams take flights into Boulder airport rather than Denver International Airport. Boulder is not set up to handle the big aircraft that college football teams charter, so they have to fly into DIA, which is about 40 miles east, before they can play.

The majority of American airports share a three-letter location code with the FAA and IATA; however, Boulder Municipal is BDU (formerly 1V5) to the FAA and WBU to the IATA (which allocated BDU to Bardufoss Airport in Bardufoss, Norway). Rocky Mountain Rescue Group has presented Boulder Municipal Airport with the 2020 Flatiron Award in recognition of their exceptional cooperation and assistance to search and rescue operations. An essential component of the coordination of local emergency management is the airport. Located at the base of the foothills, the airport serves as a training site for these crucial activities and offers centralized access for helicopter missions related to search and rescue and firefighting.

The airport has two runways and is situated on 136 acres (55 hectares). All general aviation aircraft operated out of the airport 56,629 times in the year that ended December 31, 2017, or an average of 155 times a day. This airport previously housed 59 aircraft: 19 gliders, 5 multi-engine, and 35 single-engine aircraft. An executive terminal at the airport is run by Journeys Aviation.
