Barkley Regional Airport

Barkley Regional Airport

Barkley Regional Airport is a domestic American airport in West Paducah, Kentucky situated 22.5km west of Paducah in McCracken County. It is named after former Vice President of the United States Alben W. Barkley, who was from western Kentucky. This airport serves the Jackson Purchase Region of Kentucky. It was originally built as a military airfield but was later made available for civilian use. This airport is situated at an elevation of 125 m and covers an area of about 1,018 acres. It has two runways made of asphalt with a length of about 2,000 m and 1,600 m respectively with a width of 46 m. An average of 63 flight operations take place from this airport daily.

Contour Airlines is the main service that operates these flights from this airport to Charlotte Douglas International Airport in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is the only airline subsidized by the Essential Air Service program that sets off from this airport. Embraer 145 is the only aircraft owned by this airline. Having only mid-sized aircraft in its fleet, this airline covers domestic distances from the Barkley Regional Airport.  Previously, Northwest Airlines was the only airline in the airport before this airline that used the Saab 340 aircraft.

The services related to these aircraft and other important fields are provided by Fixed Base Operator (FBO) by Midwest Aviation. This operator provides the airport with Charter services, maintenance of aircraft, aircraft rental, aircraft sales, flight training, and other aviation services. Because of these services, the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems (NPIAS) for the year 2023-27 categorized this airport as a non-hub primary commercial service facility.

These services are provided in the new terminal building. It was opened 70 years after the airport’s commencement in June 2023. Within this terminal, the airport provides travelers with facilities such as power sockets in every seat, a pet relief area, and local art. These amenities of the airport make you feel at home even when you’re not. Apart from these, there are several others such as affordable and convenient parking that helps travelers park their vehicles whenever they like so they do not have to wait for cabs. Being a smaller one, this airport has smaller crowds and shorter lines that make your travel easier.
