Asheville Regional Airport

Asheville Regional Airport

Located 9 miles (14 km) south of Asheville's downtown, Asheville Regional airfield is a Class C airfield close to Interstate 26 and the North Carolina hamlet of Fletcher. The Greater Asheville Regional Airport Authority is the owner of it. It is classified as a small-hub major commercial service facility by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in the National Plan of Integrated Airport Systems for 2019–2023.

According to passenger usage, the Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), which has been among the fastest-growing airports in the nation for a number of years, remained North Carolina's third busiest airport in 2023. July 2023 broke previous records for the number of passengers using the airport, with 244,504 passengers arriving or departing from AVL—a 24.4% increase over July 2022. With an astounding 22.2% rise in 2023 over 2022 numbers, 2,246,411 passengers passed through AVL annually, surpassing the two million passenger threshold for the first time in the airport's history.

There are now 27 nonstop airport destinations offered by the airport, several of which are global hubs that facilitate easy access to and from AVL. The airport started construction on a huge infrastructure project in August 2023, which will culminate in a new terminal that is 150% larger than the existing one. About two years will pass before the first concourse is accessible to passengers. When the project is finished, the terminal will be 150% bigger than the existing airport. The airport will have twelve gates instead of just seven, and there is plenty of space for further growth.

Inspired by the natural beauty of the mountains in western North Carolina, the new design concept will include a large and light-filled grand lobby, cutting edge areas for ticketing and baggage claim, a welcoming plaza for concessions, and gate areas that have been carefully planned to improve passenger comfort and experience. Due to its handy position at the intersection of two major interstates, I-26 and I-40, Asheville is also quite accessible.

The Asheville Regional Airport (AVL), about 20 minutes from downtown, provides nonstop flights and convenient connections through major U.S. hubs. Allegiant Air bases its personnel and Airbus A320 family aircraft at Asheville Regional Airport, making it a focal city.
