Andrews Air Force Base Airport

Andrews Air Force Base Airport

The United States Air Force (USAF) is in charge of Joint Base Andrews, which includes Andrews Air Force Base as its airport. Joint Base Andrews was created in 2009 by the merger of Naval Air Facility Washington and Andrews Air Force Base. Andrews, situated in the suburbs of Washington, D.C., close to Morningside, Maryland, serves as the home base for two Boeing VC-25A aircraft that serve as Air Force One when the President of the United States is on board. The President is usually flown in and out of Andrews when traveling by plane from Washington, D.C.

Most people are familiar with the facility since it is home to two Boeing VC-25 airplanes, registered as Air Force One while carrying the US President. Additionally located in Andrews is the Boeing C-32A, which is flown by the US Vice President. The sixteen distinct aircraft types operated by the twenty Air Force, Air National Guard, Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Department of Energy, Defense Intelligence Agency, and Maryland State Police aviation units at Andrews AFB include executive transport, cargo, fighter, and helicopter.

At Andrews, the Air Force District of Washington's 11th Wing (11 WG) serves as the host. Air and Space Expeditionary personnel (AEFs) are tasked with organizing, equipping, training, and deploying combat-ready personnel. The 11 WG is also in charge of sustaining emergency reaction rotary-wing airlift and other vital national security crisis response capabilities in the National Capital Region.

On the base, there are two runways: the eastern runway is 2,970 meters in length, while the western runway is 11,300 meters (3,400 meters). Two more runways have been eliminated: a little T-shaped runway that was closed and destroyed by 2008, and a small third runway that was located between the two larger runways. Situated near Washington, D.C., Andrews Air Force Base has played a crucial, primary, and dynamic role since World War II. It was one of the first jet bases, a fighter interceptor base, the headquarters of the 89th (Presidential) Airlift, the home base of the 79th Medical Wing, and the host base for numerous Air Force units essential to US air defense, particularly the Air Force District of Washington.
